A Great Tradition

The tradition of Volunteers protecting Tennessee has been around since the Revolutionary War. Then, we were protecting the homeland from the oppressive British Army. Today we protect our homeland from terrorists. You could almost say the Tennessee State Guard has been vigilant for more than 200 years.
Now, more than ever, we need your help. Join the Tennessee State Guard and serve the state which has given so much to you, your family and your neighbors.

Who Can Join?

Any citizen of Tennessee between the ages of 16 and 67 with no criminal record who is not currently enlisted in any active or reserve component of the Armed Forces of the United States. Preference is given to individuals with prior military service, however special-skilled civilians are also needed and will be trained.

Note: Currently the TNSG is limited to prior-service personnel recruitment with exceptions being considered only in cases of civilians with highly-specialized fields of expertise needed by the State Guard.

What is Service With The
Tennessee State Guard Like?

Service with the Tennessee State Guard is the best of many worlds. While enlistment is very similar to enlistment in any branch of military service, there is no minimum enlistment period. If you find that the Guard is not a good fit for you, simply resign and an Honorable Discharge will be granted. Other than that, it is very much like the National Guard in that you attend drills one weekend a month and the Annual Training of a three-day weekend each year.

Unlike the National Guard, which can be called out for service beyond the borders of the State of Tennessee, the Tennessee State Guard is "The Governor's Army." Members can only be activated at the order of the Governor or Adjutant General of the State of Tennessee. Members are volunteers and do not receive pay for attending drills or other routine missions. However, if the Governor specifically activates a unit, its members are paid commensurate with their equivalent pay grade in the U.S. Army.

State Guardsmen receive training in a variety of skills. Non-prior service members will learn the meaning of being part of a military organization. And prior military service members can recapture that comraderie ... that feeling of belonging to something bigger than self.

With so much to gain and so little investment of time, the Tennessee State Guard is the ultimate Civic Service Organization that REALLY makes a difference. Join Us.
